Who's leading the queue at the online checkout? According to Santa Monica, Calif.-based market research firm Centris, nearly a quarter of San Franciscans (22.3 percent) make an online purchase each month, placing the Bay Area and its residents at the top of the list of major metros with a penchant for shopping on the Net.
Shopping online is also popular among residents in Washington, D.C. (18.9 percent), Boston (18.5 percent) and Seattle-Tacoma, Wash. (18.4 percent).
Centris, which between July 2000 and June 2001 conducted telephone surveys of nearly 50,000 U.S. households, found that overall, 12.5 percent of Americans make monthly purchases from the Web. Residents of the West and Northeast are the most likely to click the "Buy Now" button.

Westerners and Northeasterners are 20 percent and 14 percent, respectively, more likely than the average American to make an online purchase. |
